On August 24, 2011, at approximately 8:04 a.m., officers from the Eastern District responded to Route 100 eastbound just prior to the Oakwood Road exit for a serious crash.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male lying on the right shoulder of the roadway. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by fire department personnel. At that time, members of the Traffic Safety Section assumed responsibility for the investigation. Preliminary information obtained from witnesses indicates that the adult male victim was operating a tow truck and pulled over to assist a sewage truck that became disabled on the right shoulder. The tow truck operator was outside of his vehicle getting ready to tow the sewage truck when he was struck by a vehicle being described as an older model, red Nissan SUV with silver trim, possibly an Xterra or Pathfinder. The vehicle initially stopped at the scene, but then continued traveling eastbound on Route 100.
Through the course of the investigation, the hit and run vehicle involved in this collision has been established as a burgundy 1987 to 1995 Nissan Pathfinder. The suspect vehicle captured from surveillance footage is pictured above.
As a result of the collision, the vehicle broke the right side mirror and right front turn signal while sustaining damage to the right front fender and losing the center cover of the right front wheel. Additionally, the windshield on the passenger side of the vehicle was shattered as a result of the impact with the pedestrian. Shortly after the collision, the vehicle was observed traveling west onHospital DrivetowardCrain Highwaypast theBaltimoreWashingtonMedicalCenter. The vehicle also had a “Nissan Pathfinder” tire cover over the spare tire attached to the rear of the vehicle. The spare tire is the same as the one depicted in the below photograph.
It is also believed that the vehicle would have been displaying a temporary, dealer or transporter tag at the time of the crash, which would have been attached to the left side of the rear tailgate just below the rear window.
